Teaching Outline ofAnalytical Transportation Planning
 
Ⅰ.Status, role and task of the course
Status: This course is a degree course of the traffic engineering undergraduate.
Role: Traffic Planning is one of the basic employment skills that traffic engineering, students must master. China's urbanization, the rural areas to speed up the modernization process, the volume of vehicles will maintain the rapid increase in traffic will further intensify contradictions, transportation master planning skills, students are expected to road traffic, urban construction, traffic management departments to obtain their talent opportunities. Therefore, the course is traffic engineering, one of the most important courses.
Task: Enable students to establish a correct concept of the transport planning, to grasp of basic ideas and methods to understand the background of relevant knowledge and skills to deal with.
 
Ⅱ.The basic requirements of the course content
To enable students to understand the China Road Transport, Urban Transport of the status quo, the main problems and development trends;
To make students understand the meaning, methods and sect of transport planning;
To understand the idea, the basic starting point and basic methods of a number of professional planning;
To improve the students’ Modeling capabilities, taking UTPS transportation planning model as an example;
To enable students make clear the principle of dealing with factors that have to be considered in transportation planning.
To enable students master the way of transportation evaluation, transportation forecasts and transportation layouts and principles of the various algorithms, the computer processes and the advantages and disadvantages.
There are many courses opened before this course: road traffic engineering, road engineering, engineering economics and management.
The teaching is highlighted in the following points
Focusing on how to proceed with the survey program design, we require students to learn how to design the content of planning survey based on analysis of purpose -budget-practice, which can be a good foundation for future independent survey designs.
Traffic model should be emphasized on how to use it to the process of evaluation ~ optimization ~ prediction; we require students to understand and apply the relationship of qualitative-quantitative; experience - art and technology well.
Planning programs focus on the consideration of goal-evaluation of research scale-civil engineering- art of architecture;
In the aspect of policy-management, we should help students to be in line with the scientific concept of development, people-oriented decision-making criteria, combined with the reality of how to analyze trade-offs;
Highlighting case study in the whole, we require students to master the knowledge through the independent thinking.
As a result of the use of the concept and software in English and students’ limited English, so we choose English teaching material, but teach students with a slow first and then fast mode so that bilingual students can understand the meaning well. We focus a lot on students’ ability of reading and questioning. We request students to master key concepts, the relationship between the word bilingual. During the class , we first teach the main points in Chinese, then let students to reading, ask questions, repeat the key concepts in English.
 
Ⅲ.The requirements of capacity-building
Ability of students cover a wide range, including:
Philosophy and logic levels: how to analyze complex multi-faced contradictory relationship between the location of the problem, how to grasp the principal contradiction, positioning the role of planning.
Engineering levels: learn how to use the system point of view to deal with the question, how common the use of a variety of operations research methods.
Computer level: how to construct algorithms, programming, awareness of the mainstream of traffic analysis software and understand the main functions.
Project level: how to organize the transport planning team ,organize the traffic investigation; analysis the reliability and choice of the data.
English reading and writing skills: enable students to master English key words of the traffic analysis software and traffic analysis report, have the capacity to self-check for new and the ability to update their knowledge.
 
Ⅳ.Content of the course
Chapter1 Introduction. The definition of transportation planning, development, work processes, values, goals and criteria, evaluation choice, the best chance to choose, public participation and case planning process.
Chapter2-Traffic survey and data processing. Survey type, classification, use demand ,data sources, survey design, data error, data analysis, land-use projections, future database of traffic, data investigation and analysis of the case.
Chapter3-The transportation model. Models defined, model design, types of models, mathematical models, typical transportation model.
Chapter4-Trip generation. analysis units, influencing factors, methods,  evaluation of disaggregate models and aggregate models ,  balance of the production and attraction, the issue of Trip Generation, case.
Chapter5-Trip distribution.  factors affecting modal split, Growth factor methods , the gravity models, the opportunity models, disaggregate models, cases.
Chapter6-modal split. Brief history, factors affecting modal split, modal split models, model choice, checking, aggregate forecasting with disaggregate models, transferability of disaggregate modal split models, simplifying modal split modelsChapter2-Traffic survey and data processing. Survey type, classification, use demand ,data sources, survey design, data error, data analysis, land-use projections, future database of traffic, data investigation and analysis of the case.
Chapter7-trip assignment. The assignment problems, the evolution of assignment methods, factors affecting route selection, supply, demand, a relationship between user equilibrium and system optimum assignments, transit assignment, basic assignment types, preparing for an assignment, sources of errors in trip assignment, validation of the base year assignment results, system evaluation, Braess’s paradox,
Chapter8-evaluation of transportation models. Sequential , discussion of model structures, discussion of the current modelling practices, future directions.
Chapter9-Case Study. Including the city's comprehensive transportation planning, management planning, public transport planning, strategic planning, traffic impact evaluation, highway network planning, feasibility studies, post-evaluation and so on.
Chapter10-evaluation technology of traffic system. The evaluation index and commonly used methods at the aspect of environment, energy, economy, society, etc.

Ⅵ.Curriculum materials and major reference books
The course materials use Aly Mekky’s Analytical Transportaion Planning and the self-designed case materials. Cases are given priority to the after-school cases in English and the cases of the planning in recent years, part of the contents are taught through multi-media teaching.
